  15. <p>    MAGAZINES: New Menu at Tina's Place
  16. </p>
  17. <p>    We have just heard from our old friend the Magazine Maven.
  18. "The NEW YORKER," he writes, "is the journalistic equivalent of
  19. a restaurant under new management. The new maitresse d' is Tina
  20. Brown, lately of Vanity Fair, where she offered a heady mix of
  21. roadhouse and haute cuisine. She has replaced Robert Gottlieb,
  22. whose fern-bar ambiance left customers hungry for less. Brown's
  23. detractors have been hoping for the souffles to fall and the
  24. drinks to be watered at Tina's Place, but her debut last week
  25. will disappoint them.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>    "True, there is James Wolcott's ghastly hype-hop prose: `
  28. "Going to Extremes" . . . mentholates the senses like a Club Med
  29. ad.' Plus some slipshod editing: two Dan Quayle `potatoe'
  30. jokes. But broken columns, boxed poems and spots of color and
  31. photographs enhance rather than vulgarize. Pieces are shorter
  32. than before but cut deeper -- especially `News from Hell,'
  33. concerning the events in Sarajevo by new contributor Anna
  34. Husarska. Yet tradition has not been entirely scrapped: see
  35. Roger Angell's valedictory to Fay Vincent, recently decapitated
  36. commissioner of baseball. Miraculously, after a long arid spell
  37. the cartoons are funny again -- particularly those by Lee
  38. Lorenz, Danny Shanahan and Leo Cullum (`This is my husband,
  39. Greg, and Greg's jacket from a previous marriage').
  40. </p>
  41. <p>    "John Updike, who has served under three New Yorker
  42. managements, contributes `Playing with Dynamite,' a poignant
  43. tale of aging in the '90s. Its last six words might describe the
  44. current situation at the New Yorker: `. . . between chaos and
  45. an airier pantheon.' It is too early for a prediction, but I'd
  46. bet pantheon."
  47. </p>
  48. <p>    MUSIC: The Royal Cello
  49. </p>
  50. <p>    The great Catalan cellist Pablo Casals is rightly credited
  51. with elevating the cello to its royal status as a solo
  52. instrument, so it is only fitting that Pearl records pays him
  53. homage by beginning its six-CD set, The Recorded Cello: The
  54. History of the Cello on Record, with his evocative 1915
  55. performance of Schumann's Traumerei. Among the 74 other masters
  56. represented here are Enrico Mainardi, whose version of Dvorak's
  57. Concerto in B minor is stately and deeply hued; and Gregor
  58. Piatigorsky, playing variations on Paganini with heart-skipping
  59. joy. All the tracks demonstrate the delicate timbres and subtle
  60. nuances that make the cello one of the most majestic of all
  61. instruments.

  63. <p>    BOOKS: Lifesaving Instruction
  64. </p>
  65. <p>    Here is the unlikeliest good novel of the year. The
  66. wambling hero of Walter Kirn's SHE NEEDED ME (Pocket Books; $20)
  67. is a pale young fellow named Weaver Walquist, who, becalmed and
  68. lacking direction, joins the antiabortion protest squad of an
  69. evangelical church in St. Paul, Minnesota. He collides with a
  70. pregnant young woman named Kim during a protest at an abortion
  71. clinic, and at first is attracted to the idea of saving her
  72. fetus and her soul. Then, faintly -- a puff of wind ruffles the
  73. calm -- he is attracted to her. Kirn, author of a 1990 story
  74. collection, My Hard Bargain, plays fair with both the churchly
  75. and the wicked -- middling people in an everyday predicament.
  76. His story is shrewd and wryly amusing.
  77. </p>
  78. <p>    CINEMA: Heroic Deeds
  79. </p>
  80. <p>    In the not-so-brave new world according to Hero, it
  81. requires two men to equal one classic Frank Capra protagonist
  82. of the Deeds-Doe-Smith variety. There is small-time thief Bernie
  83. LaPlante (Dustin Hoffman), who unaccountably rescues victims of
  84. a plane crash. Then there is homeless John Bubber (Andy Garcia),
  85. who gets the credit for so doing and becomes a media dream.
  86. Geena Davis is the ambitious TV reporter caught in the
  87. contradictory flow of this dark, quirky, excellent comedy.
  88. Writer David Webb Peoples (Unforgiven) overturns the cliches of
  89. genre and character, and director Stephen Frears (My Beautiful
  90. Laundrette) ingeniously twists Capra-esque imagery to create an
  91. exhilarating meditation on gallantry as it is practiced and
  92. perceived today.
